“Children still need a childhood with dirt, mud, puddles, trees, sticks, and tadpoles” – Brooke Hampton
When we set out on our Forest School adventures, we never quite know what the day will bring! The bush changes with each season, and Papatūānuku creates new taonga and treasures for our Tamariki to discover.
When our Tamariki walk through the trees, they are developing a deep and meaningful connection to nature, and to themselves, as they follow a path of exploration and curiosity. Forest School is a learner – centred process, and the needs of the learner are the driving force behind our ethos. Our journeys are flexible, allowing children to make their own choices, from where we go, to what we do when we get there, so that our learners can then forge their own path.
Some Tamariki want to collect sticks to go fishing off the eel bridge, others want to go running through the flowers, some want to climb trees, and others search for treasures to take back to The Haven. We provide time and space for all of these interests, ensuring each child arrives back with their physical, emotional and spiritual needs met.
Our Forest School adventures provide children the opportunity to grow as leaders, to build resilience, to take risks and learn about the natural world.
Most Importantly, it is allowing children to form a deep connection with Papatūānuku, instilling in them a love for the great outdoors. We want our Tamariki to learn the beauty, importance and significance of nature, so that as they grow up, they feel a sense of responsibility for the environment.
“Outdoor play is among the greatest gifts we can give our children; and healthy, adventurous and curious children are among the greatest gifts we can give our communities.” – Gary Erickson & Kit Crawford
