Many parents ask me about natural ways to support their children’s digestive health and immunity, including gentle parasite cleansing. While over-the-counter parasite cleanses are often recommended and can be an effective part of a family health routine, at The Haven I also focus on nutrition to help prevent parasites and support overall gut health and immunity.
Parasites are more common than many realise, particularly in children. Because kids spend so much time exploring outdoors and in close contact with one another, exposure is natural. While not always obvious, signs of parasites can include ongoing tummy upsets, bloating, restless sleep, teeth grinding, itchy bottoms, or changes in appetite and mood.
Traditionally, the best times to support the body with a gentle cleanse are spring and autumn, when our immune systems and digestion naturally shift with the seasons. Doing this as a family helps prevent reinfection and supports everyone’s wellbeing together.
Certain foods naturally create an environment that parasites find less hospitable. Pumpkin seeds contain compounds like cucurbitacin, which can help paralyse and eliminate worms. Garlic has natural antimicrobial properties, while carrots and other fibre-rich vegetables support healthy elimination. Probiotic foods such as yogurt or kefir also help restore balance in the gut.
At The Haven, I use these foods daily – fresh carrots for crunch and fibre, pumpkin seeds in bliss balls, muesli slices and granola, and garlic for flavour and immune support. These simple additions strengthen digestion, boost immunity and gently discourage unwelcome “guests.”
