Paua Ruma – Our Over Twos Room

At The Haven we have created a vibrant and engaging space where curiosity and independence thrive.

In Paua Ruma, our over twos embark on new learning adventures, building confidence, friendships, and essential life skills. With a play-based approach and individual learning plans, our Kaiako encourage creativity, self-help skills, and problem-solving.

We are deeply inspired by the Reggio Emilia Philosophy. This inspires our learning space in many ways, even with the way we set up the environment. Our environment (both indoor and outdoor) are considered ‘the third teacher’; so we honour the presence of this third teacher by setting up a calm, thought-provoking, open-ended and nurturing learning environment for our tamariki. There are different areas in our room that allow them to embrace a wide variety of different interests, promote their imaginative and creative thinking, and find calm and inviting spaces for them to navigate their emotional wellbeing. The provocations set up are inspired by the interests and current learning trends of ngā tamariki. They may be focused on heuristic play, creative play, STEM learning, motor skills, imaginary play and much more.

Learning

We know that getting ready for the move to school is so important as it can be a challenging time. We have two particular opportunities that are designed to help smooth the transition.

Our Lunch Box days help children to understand how to handle their lunchboxes and encourages them to be part of the decisions around what goes into them with advice and recipes from our super chef Doreen.

The Forest School  takes the children out into nature and provides additional hands-on opportunities to build their problem solving skills, vocabulary and confidence of working in a group, all while experiencing and developing a love for the natural world.

Both help to prepare them to confidently take the next stages in their educational journey.

Frequently Asked Questions

We do a minimum of 3 transition visits to ensure our children become familiar with their Whanau Support Teacher and new environment before starting.

We do a minimum of 3 days per week, this ensures that your child feels a sense of belonging, forms strong relationships, and settles into the rituals and routines of daily life at The Haven.

We provide a nutritious and healthy morning tea, lunch and afternoon tea each day.

Yes please, we do not provide nappies as we find every parent has a brand they know and trust to keep their baby comfortable.

Yes, you can bring in a tin of formula and a bottle to leave here so there is one less thing to remember in the morning. We provide cow’s milk for those that no longer require formula but still want a bottle. Bottles are washed and sterilised daily.

We have mattresses with sheets and blankets that we place on our carpeted area for our sleepers. Our Kaiako sit with the children and help them get off to sleep in a relaxed and calm environment.

Our Kaiako use WhatsApp to send messages and photos to parents, we also do a Daily Diary post on Storypark to show parents what their children have been engaged in each day. Parents can also call us at any time and get put through to the Paua Ruma to talk to their child’s Whanau Support teacher.

We recommend bringing in 3 changes of clothes per day. Our children have access to water play and messy play each day and often require a change of clothes to keep dry and comfortable. If your child has a day sleep, please bring in anything that helps them to sleep at home, for example, a snuggly or sleep sack.

Our Paua Ruma has 4 qualified Kaiako, all with their current first aid certificates.

We have a maximum of 29 children in our over twos space.
